Talking to your senior parent or loved one is an important first step in getting them the care they need

Mental illness in seniors is rarely discussed, leaving many older individuals without proper mental health care and support.

Talking to your senior parent or loved one is an important first step in getting them the care they need. Here are three strategies to keep in mind:

Listen without judgment. This can alleviate many seniors’ fears of coming forward to discuss their struggles.

Gently suggest treatment options. Some seniors may be resistant to professional treatment, so try to be encouraging instead of insistent.

Stay connected. Keep up with your senior loved one through regularly scheduled calls or visits so they have opportunities to discuss any challenges they may be facing.Visit our Senior Sense resource library at wellspringprevention.org/blog to learn more about helping a senior loved one with depression or other mental health challenges.
