Rutgers advances two singles players to round of 32 at ITA Regionals

The Rutgers women’s tennis team continued its participation in the ITA Regionals at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, October 10. Two players from Rutgers advanced to the singles Round of 32: Mai Nguyen and Zeynep Ilker.

Mai Nguyen secured a win over Olivia Corcoran from Villanova with scores of 6-2, 7-6. She is set to compete against Jo-Leen Saw from the University of Pennsylvania in her next match. Zeynep Ilker also progressed after defeating Jordina Cegarra Ramirez of Penn State in a three-set match, finishing 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. This victory marks Ilker’s third win in the tournament. She will face Sophia Wang from Columbia next.

Karina Jumazhanova will participate in the consolation draw scheduled for Saturday morning.

In doubles action, Mai Nguyen and Naomi Karki extended their winning streak by defeating Reagan Mangan and Gabriela Almanza from Saint Francis with a score of 8-4. The pair will play against Lusia Hepcal Barcan and Petra Koszo from NJIT in their upcoming match.

Other results included a loss for Karina Jumazhanova to Nevena Kolarevic (Fordham) in singles and defeats for other Rutgers doubles teams.

The Scarlet Knights are scheduled to return to competition on Saturday morning at the Hecht Tennis Center for further matches in both singles and doubles rounds as well as consolation play.
