Chris Gotterup, a former Rutgers men’s golf standout, achieved a significant milestone by securing third place at the 152nd Open Championship. The tournament took place at Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. This performance came just a week after his victory at the Scottish Open.
On his 26th birthday, Gotterup finished with a final-round score of 68 and an overall score of -12, trailing Harris English by one shot and champion Scottie Scheffler by five strokes. His achievement marks the best finish by a Rutgers alumnus in this major championship and is among the top performances by an American golfer this year.
“On behalf of Rutgers Nation, the pride of hearing our University on the national stage has been incredible,” said head coach Rob Shutte. “It’s fun to see Chris show off that New Jersey toughness on the global scale.”
Gotterup’s final round was marked by impressive iron play and clutch putting under pressure. He sank a crucial birdie putt on hole four, propelling him up the leaderboard and securing his third-place finish.
A 2022 graduate of Rutgers and former Big Ten Player of the Year, Gotterup is rapidly climbing the PGA Tour ranks with powerful drives and an aggressive mindset. His success further solidifies his status as one of America’s rising golf stars.
Gotterup is now eyeing a potential spot in the upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup for Team USA. His recent accomplishments continue to inspire future generations of Scarlet Knights aspiring to follow in his footsteps.
