Three members of the Rutgers men’s golf team have been named to the Big Ten Conference’s Preseason Golfers to Watch List for the 2025-26 season. The honorees are Bennett Espenshade, Argyle Downes, and Derek Gutierrez.
The three golfers are considered important returning players for head coach Rob Shutte’s squad. Last season, Rutgers finished strongly, giving the team momentum heading into the fall.
Espenshade has contributed steady performances and posted several top-20 finishes in the previous year. Downes distinguished himself last spring with multiple rounds under par and proved to be a dependable player during tournaments. Gutierrez brings experience and leadership to the program, having delivered key performances in Big Ten events.
“We’re excited to have Bennett, Argyle and Derek recognized by the conference,” Shutte said. “All three have worked extremely hard, and they represent the depth and competitiveness we have within our team this season. Their recognition is a testament to the growth of our program and the culture we’re building.”
Rutgers will start its 2025-26 season at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 7 as it aims to build on its progress in both Big Ten competition and nationally.
