In their previous outing, Rutgers secured a 2-0 victory over Ohio State, maintaining an undefeated record at home this season. Joshua Jerome scored his first career goal after receiving a pass from Jack Andrus and finishing off a volley from Matty Lynch. “Rutgers leads Ohio State, 1-0!” according to the team’s official social media account.
Later in the match, Joschi Schelb extended Rutgers’ lead by converting a pass from Timo Jansen. “Schelb took a pass from Timo Jansen in stride to beat the Ohio State defense and bury a right-footed strike into the net,” as detailed by Rutgers Men’s Soccer.
Goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton played an important role in the win, recording eight saves for his third shutout of the season and achieving his 200th career save milestone. “Subscribe/watch on B1G+ https://t.co/kFqqeGp03Lpic.twitter.com/1xb1mOzcBC,” noted Big Ten Soccer’s official account.
Cole Cruthers returns as captain for the fall campaign and will be joined by Devon Stopek, Erick Ruiz, Ciaran Dalton, and Joschi Schelb as part of this season’s leadership group.
Dalton has established himself among program leaders since joining as a freshman. He ranks fifth all-time with 55 appearances in goal and seventh all-time with 202 career saves for Rutgers.
Seven returning players started ten or more games last season; among them are Dalton and Stopek who started every match in 2024. Other regular starters include Nick Collins, Nestor Cabrera, Scott Godden, Arnar Adalsteinsson, and Cole Cruthers.
Rutgers added seven transfers ahead of this season: Joschi Schelb (St. Francis University), Camron Boumsong (St. John’s University), Andrew Kitch (University of North Carolina), Timo Jansen (University of Albany), Logan Brown (Clemson), Dan Karsten (Lipscomb), and Amer Lukovic (Montclair State). Several have already contributed goals or assists early in their Scarlet Knights careers.
The team also welcomed nine freshmen for this campaign. Jude Essuman, Cedric Lemaire, Jack Andrus arrived earlier in spring; Jeffrey Bryjack, Simon Gorczowski, Jaden Gordon, Joshua Jerome, Braxton Montgomery and Ailan Panton joined before preseason began. Montgomery and Andrus have been regular starters on defense while Essuman and Jerome have each scored goals.
Monmouth arrives at Piscataway following three consecutive wins over La Salle (2-1), Hofstra (1-0) and Temple (2-0). Historically Rutgers holds an advantage over Monmouth with an all-time series record of 11 wins, one loss and one draw; they won their first eleven meetings against the Hawks.
After facing Monmouth at home on Tuesday night, Rutgers will travel to face No. 5 Michigan on Sunday October 5 at 2 p.m.
