A risk factor is a characteristic that increases someone’s chance of developing a disease. Some risk factors for substance misuse or substance use disorder (SUD) include: 

 Genetic predisposition and/or family history

Family conflict, abuse, or neglect

 Alcohol or drug use at a young age

 Mental health challenges Low academic achievement (for students)

 Lack of connectedness with others and the community
