Living in the present can be challenging. We might worry about the future, filled with things to do and countless unknowns. Or we might ruminate on the past, wishing we had taken a different path or wondering "what if." However, focusing too much on the past and future —to the detriment of the here and now — can be damaging to our mental health in the long run.

Intentionally practicing mindfulness and living in the present, on the other hand, can quiet the chatter in our minds — and allow us to truly enjoy life as it is now.

If you're looking to become more present in your day-to-day life, here are a few tips:

Take a "mindful minute." Start with a deep breath, then notice your surroundings with all five senses. You can also take up a meditation practice to build your concentration and mindfulness.

Practice gratitude. Each day, you can think about or write down something you're thankful for. (And if a person is on that list, be sure to let them know.)

Spend time with people that make you feel good, and that appreciate you. Try to limit distractions, such as your phone, to truly enjoy their presence.

Let go of how things "should" be and accept them for how they are. Release what is not in your control, then focus on improving or cultivating what you can control.
